Kumbhakarna’s Battle
The great Strong Kumbhakarana who was huge like a Mountain himself just like that crossed over those Fortress boundary walls, came out of Lanka very quickly. His Roar was echoed by the sea; thunder clasp took place; Mountains developed crack and fell, Seeing the Rakshsaas whom Indra, Varuna, Yama could not kill the Vanaras ran to every corner.
That Angadha saw and called his Army commanders Neel, Kavaksh, Kumudha“ what are you doing, have you forgotten your Noble Lineage, Valour, Vitality Prowess and frightened and scurrying can you also run like an ordinary Monkey? Friends. Good please come back. Is Your Life so sweet? If it is not meant for Rama what is the purpose of having protecting it? He is not worthy compatible warrior. It is only a Form made to scare us away. This huge doll which has been made to scare the Rakshsaas in Lanka, let us destroy it into pieces. Come, turn back“ said Angadha.
Then the Vanara Warriors slowly recollected their courage collected together and accumulated trees, Boulders, and came to the battle field. Like the rogue elephants they met Kumbhakarana with all their might hit him hard. Despite being hit Mountain peaks, with boulders, Trees repeatedly and relentlessly that Rakshasaa Warrior did not move and was smiling. His strength was of that nature. The boulders and Mountains on hitting his body crumbled and fell on the earth. Like the Forest Fire destroys the entire Forests he confused the Great Valorous Vanara Army. Countless Vanara warriors were soaked in Blood and fell on the earth.some were strewn aside like Flowers taken and thrown. Many with their Hair dishellved, dress in disarray ran without looking back jumping over others. Some jumped into the sea and drowned. Some hid themselves in sky. Some who were strong were beaten by Kumbhakarna and ran over the bridge constructed across the sea and ran for cover. Bears climbed the Trees; some hid themselves in Caves; some were lying on the ground not making effort to even move; some did not stay there at all. Many fell at his feet; some controlled their breath and were acting like they were corpses.
Angadha who saw his Vanara Army going helter skleter shouted “Stop. Turn back; let us battle him out; in this earth wherever you go you cannot hide from him; hence come back. Why should you save your Life in Disgrace? Hey Valiant Warriors of unobstructible Valour! Even Ladies will clap and make fun on you seeing you running away casting your weapons. Do the Prideful person need a more horrible Death than that? You all have been born in noble Lineage / Dynasty. Due to Fear where are you running like ordianry Monkeys? Aren’t those shunning Courage and retreating from battle Lowly born? In that crowds each one boasted about your valouorus prowess and the Boasting you made about yourself where have they gone now? The person who is ridiculed by others and still alive will be abused by everyone as the courageless coward. Please follow the Noble path observed by our forefathers; shun your fear. If we are afraid and run away do you mean to say Yama will spare you? if we die killed by Enemy, we will get the heaven for Warriors Brahma Loka;is it that easily available? If we kill the Enemy we will get enormous fame. To get Valourous Heaven the price we have to pay is our tiny Life; where as the benefit accrued is enormous. Will this Kumbhakarana will alive once seen by Rama? Will the insect which falls on a Raging Flame can it be retrieved alive? If we save ourselves from a Rakshasaa the Valorous Fame won’t it Vanish?” - thus Angadha encouraged them. Vanaras out of fear while running they were replying “This Kumbhakaran is gorily given us death. Is this the time to do battle? You also come along with us running. If Lose our Life, will it return? if Life is there, then there is a chance for survival. if we survive then we can earn this fame in other very many battles”. Thus blaberring all of them Vanished. Then Angada seeing the Vanaras running scared of this Gory Looking rakshsasaa with ominous looking eyes, blazing away with anger this Kumbhakarana, Angahdha tried to pacify the Vanara Army telling how Rama Killed Valli, how he pierced 7 Saal trees with single Arrow and the Mountain and how the Bridge was constructed across the sea, and Rama’s,enormous PARAKRAM (Achievement, Might, Puissance, Exploits , Valor, Heroism, Gallantry, Prowess, Ability, Valour) slowly regained their confidence and regrouped them. Slowly but steadily regaining strength the Army got motivated, , abiding by Angahdha’s words, Rishaba, Sarabha, Neel, Dwividha, Maindha, Kumudah, Kavasha, Rambha, Tara, Bhanasa all these Chieftains quickly returned to battle it out with Kumbhakarana. Anjaneya also went along with them. (Slokas 36)
